On the other end of the spectrum, there are women who want to undergo breast reduction, an outpatient procedure involving reducing breast size by excising skin, glandular tissue, and fat. Typically, those who want breast reduction are women with large, pendulous breasts, particularly those with gigantomastia, because the weight of their breasts cause chronic head, back, neck, and shoulder pains, as well as breathing and circulation problems. However, even where gigantomastia is concerned, the procedure is not advisable for women who want to breastfeed. Men with gynecomastia are also candidates for the procedure.
The risks
While it has been reported that those who undergo breast reduction are the most satisfied of plastic surgery patients, the procedure is not without its risks, much like any other surgical procedure out there. Issues that may arise after the procedure include scarring, asymmetry, difficulty breast feeding, slow wound healing, fluid retention in the breasts, altered nipple sensation, altered erogenous function, change in shape, and recurrent drooping.
The upside
Aside from providing women with a great deal of comfort, breast reduction also makes mammograms easier because excessive breast tissue make it difficult to get decent readings. Therefore, the less tissue there is, the easier it is for doctors to get proper results from mammograms. Proper mammogram readings are important for detecting breast cancer at the earliest stages so in essence, getting smaller breasts may actually help save your life.
